Ever wondered why no-one else has thought about sitting some passengers in the caravan so they can have an extra bit of comfort on those long journeys? No? Neither have we.
Believe it or not, there is a lot of people out there who are asking the very question posed in the title of this post. Although we really can’t believe it ourselves, we want to give people the benefit of the doubt. We sincerely hope that no-one out there is thinking that it would be a great funfair-style ride to sit on the lounge sofa in the caravan while it is being towed down the M25 or whatever motorway, dual carriageway or any other road in the UK.
While we appreciate the sentiment that if the caravan is all locked up and there is perhaps some kind of seatbelts in place, it is crucial we set anyone straight who is even giving this a passing consideration.
Why Is it Not Allowed?
Well, for one thing, the main reason why passengers are not allowed to ride in a caravan that is being towed, is that it is illegal. Do you really want to get cautioned and possibly even charged over something so ridiculous?
Aside from the legalities, even if it was not against the law (in some states in the US it is perfectly legal to travel in a touring vehicle being towed), that doesn’t mean that it would be in any shape or form a sensible or safe thing to do. IT’s extremely dangerous, though perhaps not fully for the reasons you may expect.
Sure, any bumps or sharp turns or breaks, you will feel, and you may be shunted around a lot. You may even have things fall on you or fly into you.
The main reason why it is so dangerous though does not have any direct connection to your own personal safety.
Think about it for a moment. What do you need to be extremely careful about when packing up to go on a trip with your touring caravan? You need to make sure that the entire outfit is balanced. Any change in the weight of either the towing vehicle or your tourer could cause a potentially serious accident.
Therefore, even in the most perfect of driving conditions, we would suggest that you stick to doing things the way everyone else does and make sure all passengers are safely buckled up in your towing vehicle and not your tourer.
